Strawberries

This is the time - and California is the place - for strawberries! We haven't chatted about fruit in a little while, so let’s! Strawberries are in many ways nostalgic - they bring back memories of carefree childhood days at the start of summer, the ubiquitous side of fruit at a diner (with some blueberries sprinkled in if you were fancy), or eating a sweet and powerfully scented one in your mom’s garden (Cindy did not have a garden until recently). Their fleeting seasonality that of their peak or ‘true’ season makes them all the more precious. This is one of the best and most reliability stark differences between a store-bought basket and a far’s market basket. When you try one at least mid-way into spring, when the days are warm, it’s beyond exceptional. I’ve seen them be the “gateway berry,” where a chef takes a bite of one, eyes go wide, and they’re hooked. A strawberry picked at peak ripeness during its peak season can and should be a mind-altering experience.
